 fanfic starship classes
considering that my ship is named after explorers and there are quite a few examples in the novels and canon of ships from the same class having a certain theme, i'm wondering if anyone here designed their own class and if they had a theme for the names

Oh, absolutely!
My primary starship class is the Nottingham class. In its back story, the class was originally to bear the names of legendary cities, but that was changed to people who, while little-known, were instrumental in scientific development.
From the TOTMM tech manual:
Quote: The USS Nottingham, NCC-78505, is the lead vessel of the Nottingham class. It is named for the City of Nottingham on the Terran island of Great Britain, which was featured in the Legends of Robin Hood.
USS Marshal Martz, NCC-78506, is the second Nottingham class starship. This vessel derives its name from 20th century amateur astronomer Marshal Martz, who built Earth’s largest optical telescope constructed by a single individual. He was also instrumental in the development of amateur astronomy in the Great Lakes area of North America. This volume focuses on this vessel. In an alternate universe, this ship bears the name Brigadoon.
The third Nottingham class starship is the USS Ernst Ruska, NCC-78507. It is named after the developer of the electron microscope, which allowed humanity to see individual atoms for the first time.
USS Therise Haleakala LoBrutto, NCC-78508 is named for a 23rd century Starfleet officer who increased our understanding of Romulan culture and history by masquerading as a Romulan for more than 30 years. Even though she was an intelligence officer, her mission was to gather cultural, not military, information.
The fifth Nottingham class starship is the USS Sarek, NCC-78509. Named for the famed Vulcan diplomat who, inspired by his human wife, Amanda, championed the theory that one must understand alien cultures to negotiate agreements with them. This is now a basic tenet of Federation diplomacy.
I don't know what names the other ships would have borne if I'd kept the city names plan.

My ship is not quite an original, but more of a kitbash. Miranda hull + Oberth sensor pod = Lang Class. Named after the inventor of the new sensor systems in the Oberth pod, Doctor Helmut Lang, who is named after the genius chief engineer on the SDF-1 in the old Robotech series.
The fanfic series is named "Eon & Eternity" because it involves characters in different time periods. The ship in the 2260's is the USS Eon. The ship in the 2380's is the USS Eternity. Ships in other time periods have similar names: SS Boundless, USS Infinity, USS Perpetuity, etc...

Mine is the Chimera Class circa 2400 was her comissioning date. She was actually one of twin prototypes designed within a top secret project. The Chimera and Medusa. I had that idea after watching Babylon 5's A Call to Arms. The other thing that makes the ships unique is that they were designed using reverse engineered technology from a new race that I created that are causing some issues.

My Banshee Class starfighters are semi-original. They are based on a plane found in the old Wing Commander IV computer game, but Trekkified. Their names are mostly heraldic creatures: Manticore, Griffon, Roc, Chimera, Basilisk, Wyvern, Sphinx.

I'm also using fighters in mine. The Banzai fighter designed by Paul Cargile.

I have made up ships in slots where I find an absence.
My big issue with both Canon and fanfic starship creation - there's too little thought into the back ground of what Starfleet does and what ships it needs to do what it does.
Also - People tend to throw away designs from 5 - 15 years ago, even though we see Starfleet Supposedly flogging the the Miranda and Excelsior class designs for 90 + years.
So there's a lot of incoherence the underlying assumptions of starship designs and a lot of reinventing the wheel.
-*-
Mind you even the folks who make up Starships for the Canon do not have their story straight. Huh. Wow. A couple of months ago, I was setting up a project. I got distracted by something shiny.
So for Jay-Trek, I tend to personally refine existing designs and specify what they're for and why Starfleet decided to build them.
But of course my opinions are only binding for Jay Trek.
-*-
Garry Stahl did this essay for his Epiphany-Trek fanfic series. It was based on discussions he and I had so it's generally valid for Jay-Trek, as well.

my ship is basically a redesign of the Constellation-class....it's a midsized explorer class verses the smaller scout ships and couriers, escorts, cutters, etc and the larger multi-purpose ships....

There's a name I haven't heard in a while. Is Paul still on the net somewhere?
The Missouri is a Katana class starship designed by Tom Varvaresos. The ships of the class are The Katana and the Missouri which would have been named something more fitting to her class had it not been for the original Nebula class Missouri being destroyed in The Battle of Bajor VIII.

For my ship, the Bonaventure, I went with one of the starships that Star Trek considers canon but never showed. I do know that a lot of them of the Korolev-class got lot at Wolf 359. I originally named it after one of Canada's aircraft carriers just for the heck of it. Also I liked the Bonaventure in the 2008 Ships of the Fleet book. The actually story behind what the Bonaventure is named after can be found at this website.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonaventure
And if you haven't read my first Bonaventure story, it's in the Fan Fiction area. I am working on a second.
Good day.
